Running As A Young Candidate
Are you between the ages of 18 and 35 and thinking about running for office, or just wondering what it takes? Running as a Young Candidate is a virtual training designed to demystify the campaign process and help you see yourself as a viable candidate in Arizona’s evolving political landscape. You’ll learn the fundamentals of running for local or state office, hear directly from young elected officials about their experiences, and reflect on how your age, background, and community ties can strengthen your leadership. Join Instituto Power, Arizona Students' Association, AZ List, and Save Our Schools Arizona as we build power, confidence, and community among emerging leaders across Arizona.
Crafting Your Personal Story
Join Instituto Power and former candidates as we help you craft a values-based stump speech that will connect voters to your story.
Objectives:
Understand the structure and purpose of a “Story of Self” in political organizing, whether a candidate's stump speech or an advocacy leader's speech
Identify key life moments that shaped your values and leadership
Begin crafting and sharing a short, 2-3 minute “Story of Self”
Give and receive feedback in a supportive environment
Building A Support System
Join Instituto Power and Pima County Recorder Gabriella Cázares-Kelly and AZ State Rep. Brian Garcia to discuss how and why candidates need to build strong support systems.
During this training, we will:
Understand the importance of building a support system when running a people-powered campaign
Map out your personal and political support networks
Learn the concept of a “kitchen cabinet” in campaign planning
Explore real-world examples from current and former candidates
Instituto Power will be hosting a West Valley: Running While Young training in November, in person in Phoenix’s West Valley. Subscribe to our email to stay up-to-date when the date is confirmed and be the first to know about all our upcoming trainings and events.
